Good Evening FRJH Families,

Monday is Jersey Day. Holy Cross Elementary (Holyrood) is inviting schools around the province to help remember the life of a young boy from their community. Chromebooks

Chromebooks are essential to every student's daily routine and success in school. Despite our efforts and reminders, many students are choosing not to bring their chromebooks to school or to not have them charged. To ensure that families are aware, we will be contacting home when students come to the office to borrow some of our limited daily use chromebooks. This is so that you can communicate to your children the value of this resource and the need to bring it every day.

Respecting Private Property

We have had an increased amount of community members and other community organizations contact the school with regards to students during recess and Lunch times not being respectful, vandalizing and trespassing on Private Property. We have continued to reiterate this to students, but it is very important that families are having this conversation with their children.

Cafeteria Services - Chartwells

Cash is now being accepted during the school day for lunch purchases. Even if paying with cash, orders will need to be placed in advance by recess time. Also, we are still asking families to use the online ordering option whenever possible, as this is our preferred ordering method. Please visit   https://frankrobertsjh.nlesd.ca/about/cafeteria-menu-and-ordering-information

For more information.

Bus Seating Assignments

We will be doing bus seating assignments for all students who ride the bus to and from school on Thursday throughout the day. Moving forward all students will need to sit in their assigned seat.

Bus Lanes in front of school

This is a reminder to parents/guardians and community members that the two lanes that are directly in front of the school are BUS LANES ONLY between the hours of 7am -3pm. This is in place to help ensure the safety of students and staff. Some things to keep in mind are:

We appreciate your support in ensuring the safety of everyone in our FRJH community.

Virtual National Day for Truth and Reconciliation

Parent /Guardian Information Session

September 30th is The National Day for Truth and Reconciliation. We recognize that the concept of residential schools may be new to many people in Newfoundland and Labrador. It is important for both students and families to learn about residential schools, the impact they had on assimilating Indigenous people, and the long term effects of residential schools on Indigenous people and communities.

It is important for everyone to make a commitment to become more aware of Indigenous culture, traditions, knowledge and languages so that we may build respect and appreciation for Indigenous peoples in our province and throughout Canada.

To help support learning and increase awareness in our whole community, Frank Roberts Junior High will be offering a virtual information session that is open to all parents/ guardians and family members within our school community. We will focus on many different topics that relate to Indigenous Education. So please come join us virtually on Wednesday, September 27, 2023 at 6:00pm using the google meet link below.

Please email frankrobertsjrh@nlesd.ca for the link.

Thank you

September 17th, 2023

Good Evening FRJH Families,

I wanted to take a few moments of your time to share some dates, reminders and things that have popped up over the past week or so.

As we start a new year, please take a few moments to talk with your children about the importance of being on time and prepared for class.

Chromebooks are a necessity for every student, every class, for everyday. Please remind your children that bringing a charged Chromebook everyday to school is necessary to being prepared for class. We have a very limited amount of Chromebooks that can be signed out at the office daily. All students should have a chromebook, supplied by NLESD, charged and in their book bag everyday.

Communication is the Key. If you have any questions, or concerns, about your child's progress, please reach out to their teacher as a first point of contact.

Grade 7 chromebooks have started to be distributed and should be all distributed this week.

It is our plan to have all forms, permission slips, monies, etc… submitted using RYCOR this year. So we strongly encourage all parents/guardians to set up accounts.

We have our Annual Curriculum Night on Wednesday, Sept. 20th starting at 6:30. This will be an informal event where the focus will be on making connections and establishing lines of communication. Your evening will begin in your child's homeroom and then you will progress through your child's Day 1 schedule, meeting their teachers from that day. Please feel free to walk around the building, meeting more of our staff and seeing our learning spaces.

All Schools and District Offices within NLESD will be closed on Monday, October 2nd, 2023 to observe the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation on September 30th. This observance is being held to honour survivors and raise awareness of the tragic legacy of residential schools in Canada. We will be offering various learning and awareness opportunities leading up to that day. There will be more details to follow regarding these opportunities.

Our annual Terry Fox Run/Walk is scheduled for Friday, September 22 in the afternoon. Students are encouraged to bring in a toonie for cancer research, if possible, but not required.

Picture Day is set for Friday October 6, 2023

Please don't hesitate to reach out if you have any questions. We are dedicated to making each and every day the best it can be.

The Team at FRJH

September 5th, 2023

The morning of Wednesday, September 6th, will start as follows:

Grade 7 students will start the day together in the gym where they will meet the administrative team, find out their homeroom class and then proceed to class with their homeroom teachers.

Grades 8-9 students can log onto their powerschool account and check their homeroom assignment and you can go straight to your homeroom to start the day. If you don’t have access, don’t worry, we will have homeroom lists posted when you get in so you can find where you are.

For anyone who isn’t on a list, come to the office and we will get you settled into a homeroom.

Homeroom and Class Change Requests

Administration will not be processing any class change requests at this time. It is a very lengthy process to create class lists, and it requires input from multiple sources. It is also important that we are keeping class size as equitable as possible. We still have a number of new students transferring in and, until all students have been placed in a class and we have a clearer idea of numbers, the priority is to ensure all students are scheduled with a teacher in the appropriate program(for example English, LFI or EFI) and the schedule is running smoothly.

Starting Sept 13th, class change requests will only be considered based on the recommendation of a healthcare provider or situations previously documented/noted and only if there is space in the requested class.

After Sept 22th, we will not be processing class change requests unless there are extenuating circumstances that arise and only if there is space in the requested class.

Cell Phone Expectations for the 2023-24 School Year

Thank you so much for your continued support as we are dedicated to offering each and every student the best possible educational experience. We look forward to meeting Parents/Guardians at our Frank Roberts Junior High Curriculum Night on Wednesday, September 20th, 2023 at 6:30 pm.

September 4th, 2023

School Calendar

2023-2024 NLESD School Calendar

Dates that are specific to our school will be distributed as they are determined.

Breakfast Program

Will be up and running in a week or two. We run a Grab and Go breakfast that is available to all students. We are sponsored through Kids Eat Smart and any donations are appreciated.

School Demographics and forms

We will be using Rycor this year for our online forms and will be sending home more information as this rolls out.

Medication

On occasion, it becomes necessary for children to receive prescribed medication at school. Please be aware that in order to do so, district policy requires the completion of both a parent and physician form. You may contact the office to get forms or they are available from the NL English School District Website

If your child has to take medication during school hours, a parent/guardian must bring this medication to school in the pharmacy labeled bottle which has the child’s name and the correct dosage information as per the physician form. Phone ahead to make arrangements and a staff member will meet you at the door to take the medication.

If your child has anaphylaxis, you must have one epipen with the child and one for the office. Proper paperwork must be completed for this as well. This is required.

Allergy Alert

We have students/staff attending our school who have severe allergies to the following products: Peanuts, Tree nuts, Fish, Shellfish, Eggs, Sesame, Pineapple, Latex

If your child has an allergy or medical condition please contact our guidance team natashaautexier@nlesd.ca so we can be aware and help keep your child safe.

We ask for your cooperation in not sending these items to school with your child.

We also have students/teachers with allergies to various perfumes/scents. For this reason, students and parents must refrain from wearing scented products when on school property. Also, students should not be bringing body spray/perfume into the building. In the event we become aware of other known allergens, we will alert you as soon as possible. If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to contact your child’s teacher.

Cafeteria operated by Chartwells

2023-2024 Cafeteria Menu

Students will need to bring lunch from home for the first week of school. Cafeteria Services are scheduled to be open on Monday, September 11, 2023. Students are permitted to leave the building at lunchtime.

Attendance

Regular student attendance is directly tied to achievement in school and we want to ensure that every child is able to perform and succeed to his or her potential. Students who miss time may

experience gaps in their learning, may feel less confident in school, may struggle to complete work and may even develop social concerns. Therefore, regular consistent attendance is extremely important as is arriving at school on time.

We are more than willing to work with you to ensure your child is attending regularly and feeling safe and cared for at school. If attendance becomes a concern for your child’s teacher, as per district policy, they will make contact with you to help resolve any concerns. If concerns cannot be resolved, he/she will then inform the office and we will follow up with you to provide further assistance.

PowerSchool

Parent/Student Powerschool login Portal

PowerSchool is our student information system that contains information on your students' attendance and academic progress. We highly encourage our 7-9 students and families to make use of this resource. You can get your username and password from the office.

Closing

We are excited to see all our RAVENS both new and old on Wednesday, September 6th.
