About Us
Frank Roberts Junior High, Home of the Ravens, is located at 350 Foxtrap Access Road, Conception Bay South.
Frank Roberts Junior High promotes a safe and caring school environment through its Gotcha program which helps to develop caring and responsible young adults.
The school currently offers both Early and late French Immersion programming to interested students. A strong fine arts program also exists providing instruction in choral performance, concert and jazz bands. Opportunities also exist for students to partake in drama performances, art club mural projects and public speaking in both official languages through assemblies and competitions.
Our school, through the robotics and media production clubs, allows students to be on the cutting edge of technology.
With the assistance of parent volunteers, breakfast is provided to students and staff three mornings a week. Teacher and parent volunteers coach teams in soccer, badminton, volleyball, basketball, hockey, ultimate Frisbee, cheerleading and dance team. A student newspaper is published and the School Spirit Council, our student leadership group, hosts and plans a variety of activities and events throughout the school year. These activities are designed to promote student wellness, school spirit and community involvement while providing opportunities for students to develop and demonstrate leadership abilities.
OUR NAMESAKE
Frank Roberts was born on November 4, 1941 to Reuben and Florence Roberts in Grole, Hermatige Bay.
He received his primary education in Grole before moving to Stephenville in 1953 where he completed his elementary and secondary education. One year following his high school graduation, Mr. Roberts entered Queen's College in St. John's where he studied theology for two years.
In 1963 he enrolled as an education student at Memorial University in St. John's where he received a Bachelor of Arts in Education degree as well as a Bachelor Of Arts degree.
In 1962, while working in Stephenville, he met and married the former Sandra Brake of Corner Brook. They had two sons, Derek and Glen.
Mr. Roberts first teaching position was in Stephenville, but soon after he accepted a position as a teaching principal in Cartwright, Labrador, where he taught for the 1967-68 school year. He decided to settle in Labrador, and he raised his family there for the next ten years. During this time he worked as an administrator in various capacities. During this time, Mr. Roberts pursued a Master of Education degree from the University of Maine. He attended summer semester there for a period of four years. He was awarded a Master's degree in August, 1981.
In 1980, Mr. Roberts became principal of Fred Kirby Junior High. He remained in that capacity until 1985.
In March of 1985, Mr. Roberts was diagnosed with cancer. He stayed home with the family he so loved as he fought a valiant and courageous battle. He entered the Health Sciences Complex on the morning of February 9, 1986, where he died the same day.
Throughout his career of more than twenty years, Frank Roberts touched the hearts and inspired the minds of many students and teachers. In 1986, an award was created in his memory, and is presented yearly to an outstanding student who excels in all aspects of school life. When the former Queen Elizabeth Regional High was renamed, it seemed appropriate that it be named in honour of Mr. Roberts, an educator and friend.
